Had his heart attack not robbed the world of one of the best actors in Bollywood, he would be 67 today. It is well known that the actor came from an impoverished background. From studying while also working at a local tea shop at the age of 6, Om Puri made his way to Hollywood.
His epic friendship with the veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah started at the National Institute of Drama. Om Puri was a vegetarian but after he met Shah, the two bonded over their love for food. A vegetarian Om Puri started eating nonvegetarian and would try dishes like Brain curry. At that point, Om Puri was very insecure about his poor educational background.

Om Puri was not conventionally good looking and so, after he finished his course at NSD, he went to Pune to join Film and television Institute of India. He was disappointed by his education there. His debut happened with ‘Ghasiram Kotwal’, a Marathi movie based on Vijay Tendulkar’s play of the same name. He hardly made any money with that project.
